Fear of failure is one of the most powerful forces. There are two personalities in sports. Need to avoid failure, and the Need to achieve. Fear of failure makes athletes over think, create a sense of hesitation, turn competitions into threats and can destroy confidence. But sometimes, fear isn’t the enemy

Psychologist carol dweck explains that athletes with a fixed mindset fear failure. A fixed mindset is when we stick to what we think we know, not what is true or available.

They believe that mistakes define their ability. If they lose, to them, it means they aren’t good enough.

Athletes with a growth mindset see failure differently. A growth mindset is… mistakes become their data, losses become their feedback, weaknesses are trainable, not avoidable.

The need to avoid failure athletes don’t take risks, avoid challenges, and don’t want feedback. While the need to achievers, have high task persistence and encourage challenges

The difference isn’t their talent, it’s their interpretation. When fear becomes fuel instead of paralysis, performance changes. It enhances. Pressure becomes a privilege. Competition is an opportunity. The most successful athletes aren’t fearless, they are brave.
