Self-determination theory

The primary theoretical framework that underpins this investigation is the self determination theory (SDT), developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan (1985, 2000). SDT is one of the most influential theories of human motivation and proposes that all individuals possess three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. Autonomy refers to the need to feel in control of ones actions and decisions, competence reflects the need to feel effective and capable, and relatedness concerns the need to feel socially connected and valued by others. When these needs are satisfied, individuals are more likely to experience high quality motivation and sustained engagement.
Central to SDT is the idea that motivation exists on a continuum, ranging from amotivation, where an individual lacks intention or desire to act, to intrinsic motivation where participants are driven by enjoyment and personal satisfaction. Between these two extremes lie several forms of extrinsic motivations, each varying in how interliaed they are. These include external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation and integrated regulation.
This continuum is particularly significant in sport because not all motivation affects athletes in the same way. Research consistently demonstrates that athletes with more self- determined forms of motivation are more likely to demonstrate persistence, resilience, improved performance and positive emotional wellbeing (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Calvo et al, 2010). Athletes driven by intrinsic motivation or by highly internalised forms of extrinsic motivation such as identified and integrated regulation, tend to sustain engagement over longer periods and cope more effectively with setbacks.
By contrast, less autonomous forms of motivation- particularly external regulation and amotivation- are associated with poorer long-term outcomes, including burnout, decreased enjoyment and sport dropout. Athletes motivated primarily by external rewards, parental approval or fear of failure may perform well in the short term, but such motivation is often unstable and difficult to sustain. This makes SDT highly relevant to adolescent sport, where motivational orientation may strongly influence both performance and long-term participation.
Table two illustrates how the self-determination continuum can be applied to adolescent sport and highlights the relationship between motivational type and performance outcomes.
