Dealing with a bad race or meet

Bad races happen to everyone. No matter how hard you train or how much you care, there will be days where things just don’t go your way. A slow time, a rough swim, or a race that didn’t feel good can be frustrating and emotional—especially when you put in so much effort.
What matters most isn’t the bad race itself, but how you respond afterward.
Even like myself, after my first ever finals at nationals, I felt I performed not up to my standard. That I disappointed everyone. But the truth is, its okay to be upset. Pretending you don’t care usually makes things worse.
Give yourself some time to feel disappointed, then shift your focus forward. A bad race does not define you as an athlete or a person. One performance does not erase weeks or months of hard work.
Every practice and race after a bad performance is a chance to reset. Growth comes from how you bounce back.
Bad races are part of the journey. How you respond to them builds mental toughness that lasts far beyond one season.
